📚 Ready for the Classroom

School Readiness Programs

Starting school is a milestone every family looks forward to — and one that takes preparation. Luminaria's school readiness program builds the skills your child needs to walk into a classroom with confidence: sitting in a circle, following directions, transitioning between activities, and engaging with peers.

What Is School Readiness?

School readiness is an ABA-based program that targets the specific skills your child needs to succeed in a classroom setting. We're not teaching ABCs and 123s — we're building the foundational skills that make learning possible: sitting and attending, following group instructions, transitioning between activities, and working independently.

Think of it this way: a child can be brilliant, but if they can't sit in a circle for story time, raise their hand to answer a question, or transition from art to lunch without a meltdown, school becomes overwhelming fast. Our program targets these "classroom survival skills" so your child can focus on learning once they get there.

Skills We Build

  • Sitting and attending — staying seated during group activities, maintaining attention during instruction, looking at the teacher
  • Following group instructions — responding when the teacher addresses the whole class, not just one-on-one directions
  • Transitioning between activities — moving from circle time to centers to lunch to recess without distress
  • Raising hand and waiting turn — learning to wait, not call out, and take turns in group settings
  • Independent work — completing a task at their desk without constant adult support
  • Toileting — using the bathroom independently, including the school routine of asking permission and going at scheduled times
  • Lunch and snack routines — opening containers, eating in a cafeteria setting, cleaning up after themselves
  • Interacting with peers in groups — sharing materials, taking turns with classroom supplies, participating in group games

How It Works

School readiness sessions happen in your home, where your child's therapist creates simulated classroom activities. We set up "circle time" in your living room, practice transitions between activities, and build independence during structured tasks — all within the comfort of your child's familiar environment.

Your child's BCBA designs a program that targets the exact skills your child needs, based on their age, developmental level, and the expectations of their upcoming school placement. We build skills gradually — starting simple and increasing complexity as your child progresses.

When possible, we coordinate with your child's future school and IEP team. Sharing progress data, aligning on goals, and understanding the specific expectations of your child's classroom helps us prepare them for success on day one.

Who It's For

  • Children preparing for pre-K or kindergarten who need targeted practice with classroom routines and expectations
  • Children transitioning from home-based services to school who have been receiving ABA at home and are approaching school age
  • Children with IEPs who need classroom skill support — they may have academic readiness but need help with the behavioral and social demands of a classroom
  • Children re-entering school after a break, placement change, or transition between programs

Common Questions About School Readiness

When should we start school readiness?+

Ideally, 6-12 months before your child's expected school start date. This gives enough time to build and practice the skills they'll need. But every child is different — if school is approaching sooner, we can prioritize the most critical skills and make meaningful progress even in a shorter timeframe.

Do you work with our child's school or IEP team?+

Yes, we coordinate with your child's school and IEP team whenever possible. We can share progress data, align on goals, and ensure the skills we're building at home match what's expected in the classroom. A smooth transition works best when everyone is working together.

What if my child isn't toilet trained yet?+

Toilet training is one of the skills we can work on as part of school readiness. Many children with autism need a structured, ABA-based approach that breaks the process into manageable steps. We'll create a plan that works for your child and your family's routines — and help your child build this important skill before school starts.

How is this different from regular ABA therapy?+

School readiness is a focused component within ABA therapy. While regular ABA addresses a broad range of skills, school readiness specifically targets classroom skills — sitting in a group, following multi-step instructions, transitioning between activities, and working independently. Think of it as ABA with a classroom lens applied.
